Living Our Work

At DbD, we are serious about our work-life balance. That’s why we give employees one day per quarter to experience placemaking first hand and to share with the world how it impacts their work.

Stories From the Field

Biking from Pittsburgh to DC with Bike & Build

“I joined Bike & Build for a six-day, 350-mile bike ride for affordable housing. We followed the Great Allegheny Passage and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath on our route from Pittsburgh to Washington DC. As a former AT community researcher, I enjoyed hearing about trail towns from the Conservancy Director for Greater Allegheny Towpath (GAP).”

Finding Hidden Powder in Vail, CO

“It was an amazing day on the slopes: exploring new runs, finding hidden powder, and celebrating a great day over a beer on the lift! It was a blast to see a new area close to where I grew up. Colorado is a beautiful place to be outdoors and I am grateful for every minute of it!

Living It Up in Bozeman, Montana

“We spent the weekend exploring just a small fraction of what Bozeman has to offer; including Hyalite Canyon, the Museum of the Rockies, and Montana Grizzly Encounter. Main Street in downtown Bozeman is full of amazing local shops, dining, and small-town charm. It was a fun-filled weekend full of amazing amenities and outdoor accessibility.

Exploring the Wilderness: Shining Rock

“This time spent on the trail also reminds me of the importance of mapping existing pathways. In the backcountry, one of the most important things you can have is a good map or trails app to keep you on track. It’s clear that GIS and cartography have a powerful role to play in making outdoor recreation safe and accessible.”

Tasting Local Favorites in Wilkes County

My girls and I decided to explore Wilkes County – beginning on the “wide open” east side of the County, driving through rolling hills and ending up in the vibrant downtowns. We had a great time meeting the owners of our favorite coffee shop, local bakery, and enjoying some delicious treats! These local business owners are the reason Wilkes County is alive and growing.

Exploring Brevard, NC

My fiancé Matt and I explored biking in and around Brevard, NC. The people were friendly, the food was never disappointing, and we got muddy on our bikes which always serves as a win! Looking forward to checking out more of the extensive trail network in the future!

Exploring Independent Resorts in Vermont

My partner Sophie and I were lucky enough to spend time with her family in Vermont over the holidays. Despite a warm winter and lack of snowfall, we made the most of what we had, avoided the crowds of the bigger resorts and spent a day at the local ski hill, the Middlebury Snowbowl, with friends and family. Grilling in the parking lot and taking endless laps, the day was spectacular. Reinforcing that you don’t need the biggest slopes or the freshest powder to have fun.
